This Is A Toto Asia Success Story You'll Never Remember

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words to ensure that the future generation could understand the words. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For instance dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

The early history of Toto that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured products to meet the growing demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and increase profits. The company employed the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a greater degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. The most recent toilet features an environmentally friendly, powerful tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than typical models.

The first museum of the company was opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution and its group companies (all related to ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and other products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.

Before forming Toto members of the group did session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The band started out as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. The record companies put the band under pressure to deliver a hit single or they would drop the album. Luckily for Toto, they did and they did it with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album opens up hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works amazingly well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of previous albums and was a stronger, more constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group went on an extensive world tour in support of it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes at the time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
